SUMMARY:New Study Presents a Plan for a Low Cost and Clean Grid: A Discussion of the Seams Study with Transmission Leaders
DESCRIPTION:The Interconnections Seam Study (“Seams Study”) is a remarkable analysis that points the way toward the ultimate integration of the U.S. power grid\, which will provide consumers with access to lower-cost\, more reliable\, and cleaner electricity. On Tuesday\, October 9 at 1 p.m. ET/10 PT\, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid (ACEG) discussed the implications of this study. Rob Gramlich\, ACEG Board Member and President of Grid Strategies LLC\, moderated the discussion and Jay Caspary\, co-chair of the study’s Technical Review Committee and Director of Research & Development at Southwest Power Pool presented key findings from the study. Michael Goggin\, member of the Technical Review Committee and Vice President of Grid Strategies\, and Jesse Jenkins\, a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School\, weighed in with their commentary on why expanding the grid is critical for consumer savings\, electricity sector decarbonization\, and increased reliability. You can watch the webinar below and download a PDF copy of the slides here. Additionally\, you can learn more about the study on the NREL website and the ACEG website.

SUMMARY: A Discussion of Superpower with Russell Gold and Michael Skelly\, Facilitated by Katherine Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:“Like Eisenhower\, Skelly had a plan: He wanted to begin building a new power grid that could carry inexpensive renewable electricity from places such as the Oklahoma panhandle to the east and west. An electricity superhighway that would save customers money while reducing pollution and carbon emissions. An interstate system for electrons.” – Russell Gold\, WSJ \nOn July 16\, 2019\, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid hosted a webinar  featuring a discussion with Russell Gold\, senior energy reporter at The Wall Street Journal and author of Superpower: One Man’s Quest to Transform American Energy. In his new book he explores efforts to integrate affordable renewable energy and reconceptualize the American power grid\, profiling the work of renewable energy pioneer Michael Skelly. Michael Skelly\, current senior advisor at Lazard and founder of Clean Line Energy\, joined the conversation to discuss his experience developing clean energy and transmission infrastructure\, as well as ongoing challenges and opportunities. Katherine Hamilton\, chair of 38 North Solutions and co-host of The Energy Gang\, facilitated the discussion. You can watch the webinar below and download a PDF copy of the slide deck. Additionally\, you can buy a copy of Superpower here.

SUMMARY:Transmission Needed to Meet Corporate America’s Growing Demand for Renewable Power
DESCRIPTION:Big companies are increasingly signing deals to buy wind and solar power\, and their large and growing demand may exceed the capacity of existing and planned transmission lines—yet transmission planners aren’t taking this into account as they draw up their future plans\, according to a new study from Wind Energy Foundation. On March 27th at 12 p.m. ET\, Americans for a Clean Energy Grid discussed the implications of this study for transmission planning with a diverse array of panelists. Stefani Millie Grant\, Senior Manager\, External Affairs and Sustainability at Unilever\, Eli Massey\, Senior Advisor at the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO)\, and David Gardiner\, President at David Gardiner and Associates joined moderator John Jimison\, Executive Director of Americans for a Clean Energy Grid to explore the large customer and real-world system operator’s perspective on expanding and upgrading transmission to increase corporate access to renewable energy. Americans for a Clean Energy Grid is a diverse coalition of business and environmental leaders supporting efforts to expand\, integrate and modernize America’s high-voltage transmission system. You can watch the webinar below\, download a PDF copy of the slides here\, and access the full transcript here.

SUMMARY:Transmission: The Key to a Cheaper\, Smarter\, Cleaner Electricity Grid
DESCRIPTION:Do you care about our energy future? The transmission system is widely misunderstood and it is time to dispel the myths that have grown up around this critical backbone of our nation’s economy\, delivering electricity to virtually everyone. Join Americans for a Clean Energy Grid and WIRES for a discussion of long-distance transmission—and the importance of paying attention to the challenges the grid faces as we confront the need not only to maintain its reliability and resiliency\, but to expand it\, modernize it\, and integrate it as the central nervous system for an increasingly electrified\, digital and sustainable society. Our webinar on December 13th at 1:00 p.m. featured former FERC Chairman James Hoecker\, currently Advisor and Counsel to WIRES and Julia Frayer\, Managing Director of London Economics International and one of the co-authors of a recent report\, “The Truth About the Need for Transmission Investment: Sixteen Myths Debunked.” The webinar was moderated by John Jimison\, Executive Director of Americans for a Clean Energy Grid. Americans for a Clean Energy Grid is a diverse coalition of business and environmental leaders supporting efforts to expand\, integrate and modernize America’s high-voltage transmission system. WIRES is an international non-profit trade association working to fulfill the promise of a Twenty-first Century North American electric economy.
