Wednesday, May 8 (Washington, D.C.) — Today, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced their initial list of potential National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors (NIETCs). DOE may designate any geographic area as a NIETC if the agency finds that customers are harmed by a lack of transmission in the area and if the development of new lines would advance national interests, including increased reliability and reduced electricity costs. The agency invites the public to submit comments on the potential NIETCs by June 24. ACEG Executive Director Christina Hayes released the following statement:
“We applaud the Department of Energy for moving forward with this step in identifying National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors. Designating these corridors is crucial to unlocking funding and making transmission permitting more efficient, and will be a helpful complement to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s upcoming regional planning and cost allocation rule. Once the corridors are finalized and industry can begin building, NIETCs will play a part in increasing reliability and resilience, lowering customers’ costs, decreasing congestion, and bringing new energy resources onto the system. We encourage interested parties to submit comments, and look forward to working with Secretary Granholm and the DOE to continue to move this process forward.”
